BIG MAGIC : CREATIVE LIVING

BIG MAGIC : CREATIVE LIVING

I sit here today deciding to do something a little different. Something out of the ordinary. Something beyond myself. This isn’t going to be a blog about edibles. Not a top 5 list. Not even a self help blog (although creativity is no doubt good for the soul).

I sit here in hopes to inspire. As I have been inspired.  I’ve been slapped, y’all. I’ve been slapped in the face by the creativity bug. I’ve been slapped by Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Eat, Pray, Love. Her new book Big Magic has planted a seed in me, and I hope to plant a seed in you.  I’ve just started but it has somehow managed to light a fire under my ass.

So far, the book talks about making things for absolutely no reason. No reason at all. We too often do things for money, fame, or recognition. Things outside of ourselves. Rarely do we do things out of pure love. We never just do things because we want to anymore. At least not as adults. And especially not since the advent of social media.

I remember when I was younger I would just make things. Draw. Rap. Sing. I’m old, so this was all before social media. There was no audience. No one to show off to. I did it purely out of love., I did it because I felt it in my soul. I did it because I have ADHD and needed an outlet. I have always been a creative person. I believe we all are.

We all have our own ways of being creative. Creativity isn’t just exclusive to the arts. Creativity is in the way you play basketball. The way you play video games. The way you knit a sweater or make a meal. We all have a creative deity of some sort that's screaming for us to make things. The problem is we don’t always act on it. Due to laziness. Lack of time. Or perhaps a deep rooted fear of failure, or mockery.

I don’t know what it is exactly for you. But as I got older I tended to make things for reasons outside of myself. Reasons that had nothing to do with the pure love of creativity. But having started this book, I have a sudden urge to create things. Writing, podcasting, music, movies… anything creative. And I want to inspire you to do the same. Let’s get out there and make some shit. You don’t have to show it to anyone. Or even tell anyone about it.

Let’s just be kids again. Let’s let creativity in. Let’s produce more and consume less. Y’all know my email. Shoot me an email and tell me about a project you’re working on or thinking of starting. Or we can link up and make some shit. Let’s just produce. It’s our divine right.
